My Wife Was Pulled Over for Speeding Expecting Nothing More
“Why?”
“You seem nervous.”
“I’m just annoyed about getting pulled over.”
The answer sounded practiced.
At Margaret Ellis’s house, dinner felt normal.
Too normal.
Margaret talked about gardening.
Rebecca laughed.
Helped clear the dishes.
Told stories about work.
But something still felt wrong.
The card stayed in my pocket all evening.
Around nine o’clock, Rebecca announced she was going to stay overnight to help Margaret sort through old family photographs.
I told her I needed to head home because of work.
She studied me carefully.
Then nodded.
“Drive safe.”
An hour later, I was sitting outside a motel, staring at the detective’s business card.
Finally, I called.
To my surprise, he answered.
“Detective Thomas Mercer.”
“My name is Nathan Brooks.”
Silence.
Then:
“I wondered if you’d call.”
My pulse quickened.
“What is this about?”
The detective sighed.
“Can you meet me tomorrow?”
“Why?”
“Because this is not a conversation I want to have over the phone.”
The next morning, I drove three hours to Ohio.
Detective Mercer met me at a small police station.
He looked tired.
The kind of tired that comes from carrying unfinished business for too many years.
He led me into an office.
Then placed a file on the desk.
You won’t believe what happened next…
