PART 2: A Stranger Let Me Sleep on His Shoulder—Then My Ex-Husband Found Me Before the Plane Even Landed -035

I crossed the room without answering.

Through the peephole, I saw Daniel.

Relief came first.

Then confusion.

I opened the door with the security latch still fastened.

“Yes?”

Daniel held an envelope.

“Sorry to bother you.”

“What is it?”

“This was delivered downstairs for you.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who delivered it?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

I glanced at the phone in my hand.

Ethan was still on the line.

Daniel noticed.

“Is that Mr. Walker?”

I nodded.

His expression remained calm.

“Ask him whether he sent an envelope.”

I lifted the phone.

“Ethan, did you send something tomy hotel?”

“What hotel?”

The fear in his voice returned instantly.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.”

Daniel’s posture changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Don’t open it yet,” he said.

Ethan heard him.

“Who is there?”

“Adrian’s security.”

“Elena, listen to me. Do not tell anyone what you found tonight.”

I almost laughed at the impossible timing.

“Someone just delivered something to me, Ethan.”

“What?”

“An envelope.”

“Don’t touch it.”

Daniel was already examining the outside.

“No return address,” he said.

My name was handwritten across the front.

ELENA WALKER

Nothing else.

Daniel took a photograph and stepped down the hall to make a call.

I remained behind the partially opened door.

“Ethan,” I whispered, “who knows I’m here?”

“I didn’t even know you were at a hotel.”

“Sam?”

“I don’t know.”

“Rebecca?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“I don’t know.”

Those three words again.

But this time they frightened both of us.Daniel returned.

“It doesn’t appear mechanically unusual. We can open it downstairs if you’d prefer.”

I looked at the envelope.

Then at Lily.

Then at the emails glowing on my laptop screen.

Northbridge.

Caroline Prescott.

Samuel Baines.

Three years of secrets.

“I want to see it.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

He stared at it.

His expression changed.

“What?” I asked.

He did not answer immediately.

“Daniel.”

He turned the photograph toward me.

It had been taken years ago.

Adrian stood outside what looked like a hospital entrance.

He was younger.

Beside him was a woman I instantly knew had to be Caroline.

Same eyes.

Same dark hair.

She looked thin but cheerful, one hand lifted toward the camera.

There were two other people in the photograph.

One was Samuel Baines.

And the other—

My knees nearly gave way.

I grabbed the doorframe.Because standing beside Adrian Prescott in a photograph taken almost three years before I met him was my husband.

Ethan.

I stared at the phone in my hand.

“Ethan?”

He did not answer.

“Why are you in a picture with Adrian?”

Nothing.

My pulse thundered.

“You told me you didn’t know him.”

Finally, Ethan spoke.

Very quietly.

“I told you I’d never met him.”

I looked again at the photograph.

“You’re standing five feet away from him.”

“That doesn’t mean we met.”

“What does that even mean?”

Daniel turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

Only one sentence.

He read it silently.

Then handed it to me.

The handwriting was neat.

Almost elegant.

I read the message once.

Then again.

Ethan is not the reason you were brought to Houston. Ask Adrian who was supposed to be sitting in seat 14B.

My eyes lifted slowly.

Seat 14B.The seat beside mine.

Adrian’s seat.

I looked down at Lily sleeping peacefully behind me.

Then toward the empty hotel hallway.

And for the first time since boarding the plane in Dallas, I wondered whether meeting Adrian Prescott had been an accident at all.

I read the sentence on the back of the photograph until the words stopped looking like language.

Ask Adrian who was supposed to be sitting in seat 14B.

The hotel hallway remained perfectly quiet.

Somewhere behind me, the air conditioner hummed.

Lily slept inside the room, one arm thrown over her stuffed rabbit, unaware that her mother had spent the last twenty minutes discovering that nearly everyone in her life seemed to know something she did not.

Ilooked at Daniel.

“What seat was Adrian in?”

His expression answered before his mouth did.

“Fourteen B.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course it was.

For one irrational second, I wanted to tear the photograph in half.

Instead, I held it tighter.

My phone was still pressed to my ear.

“Ethan?”

He hadn’t disconnected.

“I’m here.”

“Do you know anything about this?”

“About the seat?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“About Adrian being on that flight?”

“No.”

“About me being on that flight?”

“Elena.”

I hated the way my name sounded when he used it as a substitute for an answer.

“I bought the ticket myself.”
