The Girl Who Chose Me at Prom Appeared at My Door 20 Years Later – She Had No Idea Who I Was

The most popular girl in school asked me to prom when everyone else was making fun of my weight.

Twenty years later, she appeared at my front door carrying a bag of food.

She looked exhausted.

Her clothes were soaked from the rain.

Her hands were trembling.

And she had absolutely no idea who I was.

I recognized her immediately.

She was Charlotte.

The same girl who had once walked into a crowded school hallway and chosen the boy everyone else had decided wasn’t worth noticing.

But before I tell you what happened that night, I need to take you back to where our story began.

In 2005, my life changed in a single afternoon.

I was seventeen years old when my parents died in a highway accident.

I was the only survivor.

For months afterward, I could barely walk.

My body was injured, but the emotional damage was even worse.

I had lost both of the people who had always made me feel safe.

My aunt June and uncle Ray took me into their home and did everything they could to help me recover.

But going back to school was another kind of battle.

My body had changed after the accident.

I gained weight quickly.

And teenagers can be cruel when they find something they believe makes a person different.

At school, I stopped feeling like a person.

I became a target.

People laughed when I walked down the hallway.

They gave me names I don’t want to repeat.

Some students whispered behind me.

Others said things directly to my face.

Eventually, I stopped looking at people when I walked past them.

I kept my eyes down.

I tried to make myself invisible.

So when prom season arrived, I had already made my decision.

I wasn’t going.

Why would I?

I couldn’t imagine walking into a room filled with hundreds of people who had spent years making me feel ashamed of myself.

I had already accepted that prom was something other people got to experience.

Then Charlotte walked up to me.

She was one of the most popular girls in school.

She was the head cheerleader.

She was beautiful.

Almost every guy in school wanted her attention.

I assumed she was going to ask me something about one of my classmates.

Instead, she looked directly at me.w

“Would you go to prom with me?”

I honestly thought she was talking to someone behind me.

I turned around.
