Why Do Jeans Get Weird Ripples After Washing?
Why Do Jeans Get Weird Ripples After Washing?

Ever washed your favorite jeans and found weird ripples or bubbles around the knees? You’re not alone. This happens to almost everyone, and there’s a simple reason behind it.
So why does this happen?
Those “weird ripples” are caused by 3 main things:
- 1. The Fabric Mix: Most modern jeans aren’t 100% cotton. They have 1-3% elastane or spandex to make them stretchy. When you wash and dry them with heat, the cotton shrinks but the elastane doesn’t. This causes the fabric to pucker.
How to Prevent Jeans Ripples
- Wash in cold water: Cold water prevents shrinking and protects the elastane.
- Turn them inside out: This reduces friction and keeps the color better.
- Air dry or low heat: Hang dry is best. If you use a dryer, use low heat and take them out slightly damp.
- Don’t overfill the washer: Give your jeans space to move freely.
- Iron while damp: If ripples already appeared, iron the knees while the jeans are slightly damp to smooth them out.
Can You Fix Ripples That Are Already There?
Yes! Spray the rippled area with water, then iron it on medium heat. Or wash them again in cold water and lay them flat to dry. Most of the time the ripples will relax.
