78 years of marriage: Andreas and Sofia’s secret
They were married on July 17, 1946… and today they are celebrating 78 years of marriage.
When Sofia married Andreas, she was only 18 years old.
They had no home.
They had no money.
They had no certainty about the future.
They had only two alliances and one promise.
The one about never letting go of each other’s hands.
They have endured wars, poverty, disease, and countless hardships.
There were nights when they shared the last piece of bread.
There were days when they didn’t know how they would pay the bills.
There have been times when life has tested them like few others.
And yet…
78 years later, they are still sitting side by side, hand in hand as on the first day.
But what Andreas said on their 78th birthday moved the whole family to tears…
The house was full
Three generations had gathered in the living room.
Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
They were all looking at Sofia and Andreas, sitting on the old sofa, the one they had bought forty years earlier, the one they had had reupholstered so many times that nothing remained of the original.
But they were still sitting there.
Together.
As always.
Sofia’s hair was completely white, but her eyes still shone with that light that Andreas said had made him fall in love with her at eighteen.
Andreas no longer walked straight. His back had become hunched over the years, but his hand remained firm when it held Sofia’s.
The cake was on the table.
Seventy-eight candles.
Too many to count.
Too much to blow them off.
But no one dared suggest that we only light a few of them.
Because each candle represented a year.
And each year was a story.
The eldest son spoke
Dmitri, the eldest son, stood up.
« Father, mother… We want you to tell us something. »
Andreas looked at Sofia.
She smiled.
« You first, old man. »
Andreas cleared his throat.
He took his time.
He looked around him.
His children.
His grandchildren.
Her great-grandchildren.
Then he looked at Sofia.
And he began to speak.
« When I married this woman, » his voice trembled, « I had nothing. I had no home. I had no money. I had no clear future. »
He paused.
« But I had something better. »
He looked at Sofia.
« I had someone who believed in me when no one else did. »
Sofia lowered her eyes.
Andreas continued.
« I remember the first night in our house. If you could call it a house. It was a small room, with a leak in the ceiling. It rained outside and it rained inside. »
Some people laughed.
