78 years of marriage: Andreas and Sofia’s secret
« And Sofia… » he looked at her, « Sofia didn’t complain. She didn’t cry. She didn’t tell me I’d made a mistake. »
His voice broke.
She simply took the blankets, laid them on the floor, away from the leaks, and said, « Andreas, as long as we’re together, any place is home. »
Silence.
Andreas shook Sofia’s hand.
« That night, I understood something. Something that has guided me for seventy-eight years. »
He looked at his family.
« Love isn’t what you feel when everything is perfect. Loving is what you do when everything is difficult. »
The secret of a life together
Andreas took a deep breath.
« There were times when we had nothing to eat. And Sofia gave me her share. She said she wasn’t hungry. But I knew she was lying. »
Sofia smiled.
« And I knew you knew it. But you let me believe you believed me. Because that, too, was love. Letting the other person take care of you, even when you know the truth. »
Andreas nodded.
« There were times when I was sick. Very sick. The doctors said I wasn’t going to make it. And Sofia stayed awake all night, holding my hand, saying that everything would be alright. »
He looked at his children.
« And you know what? She was right. Everything was fine. Because she didn’t let me leave. »
Then he looked at his grandchildren.
« You see us now. Old. Slow. With trembling hands. But I want you to know one thing. »
He leaned forward.
“Love isn’t measured by good days. It’s measured by bad days. The nights when you don’t know how you’re going to pay the rent. The days when your child is sick and you don’t have money for the doctor. The times when you want to give up… But you don’t because someone else depends on you.”
He looked at Sofia.
« And I never wanted to give up. Because she was always worth it. »
Sofia’s words
Sofia spoke.
Her voice was soft, but firm.
« Andreas was never perfect. »
She smiled.
« He left the wet towel on the bed. He ate the last piece of cake without asking. He snored like thunder. »
Everyone laughs.
“But when I was sad, he knew how to make me laugh. When I was sick, he took care of me as if his life depended on it. When I was scared, he took my hand and said, ‘Everything will be alright, Sofia. We’re together.’”
She looked at Andreas.
« And everything was always fine. Because we were together. »
Then she looked at her family.
« I want you to know one thing. Marriage isn’t easy. It never has been. It never will be. There are days when you want to scream. Days when you want to give up. Days when you wonder if it was all worth it. »
She paused.
« But then you look at the person next to you. And you remember why you said yes. And you know it was worth it. Every day. Every struggle. Every sacrifice. »
She shook Andreas’s hand.
« Because in the end, when it’s all over… the only thing that remains is the person who was there. The one who didn’t leave. The one who stayed. »
Andreas’s secret
Andreas spoke again.
« I want to tell you a secret. »
Everyone leaned forward.
« Fifty years ago, I almost left her. »
Sofia looked at him.
» What ? «
« Yes. Fifty years ago. I was tired. Tired of working so much. Tired of not having enough. Tired of feeling like I was never good enough for you. »
Sofia said nothing.
« And one night, I went out for a walk. Alone. Without telling you where I was going. And I thought… I thought that maybe, if I left, you would be better off. That another person could give you what I couldn’t. »
The room was silent.
« I walked for hours. And then… I understood something. »
He looked at Sofia.
« I realized it wasn’t about what I could give you. It was about what we could build together. That you didn’t need a perfect man. You needed a man who wouldn’t give up. »
He squeezed her hand.
« And I didn’t give up. And neither did you. And that’s why we’re here. Seventy-eight years later. Still hand in hand. »
The secret, according to Andreas
Sofia was crying.
Andreas was crying.
And the whole family was crying with them.
The youngest grandson, an eight-year-old boy, approached.
« Grandpa, what’s the secret? How did you manage to stay together for so long? »
Andreas looked at him.
He smiled.
« The secret, my child, is that we never went to sleep angry. »
The boy frowned.
« Is that all? »
