PART 2: A Stranger Let Me Sleep on His Shoulder—Then My Ex-Husband Found Me Before the Plane Even Landed -030

The first indication that Elena Morales had boarded the wrong flight was not the billionaire sitting beside her.

It was the message waiting for her when the wheels touched the runway.

I know where you are. Don’t make me come get Lily.

Elena stared at the words until the letters blurred.

Her daughter was still asleep against her chest.

Across the aisle, passengers were reaching for overhead bags, switching on phones, laughing, stretching, impatient to escape the narrow metal tube that had carried them from Monterrey to Houston.

Beside Elena, Adrian Prescott remained perfectly still.

Only twenty minutes earlier, Elena had believed he was simply a tired businessman who had asked her for the strangest favor of her life.

Pretend you’re asleep on my shoulder.

She had done it because people were filming him.

Then, against every intention, she had actually fallen asleep.

For almost two hours.

And only moments before landing, a flight attendant had approached and quietly said, “Mr. Prescott, your security team is waiting for you on the tarmac.”

That was when Elena had learned that the polite stranger who had folded napkins into animals for Lily was Adrian Prescott, one of the most powerful businessmen in America.

Now he was looking at her phone.

Not at the message itself.

At Elena’s face.

“What happened?”

Elena locked the screen immediately.

“Nothing.”

Adrian’s expression barely changed.

But during the flight Elena had already learned that he was the kind of man who noticed things other people missed.

“You went white.”

“I’m fine.”

“Elena.”

Something about the way he said her name nearly broke her.

Not possessively.

Not insistently.

Simply as if he was reminding her that she did not have to lie.

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Terminal C. Blue sweater. Don’t run.

Her blood turned cold.

Elena slowly looked toward the window.

The aircraft was still taxiing.

No one outside could possibly see her yet.

Unless—

“Who knows you’re on this flight?” Adrian asked.

She swallowed.

“My cousin.”

“Anyone else?”

“No.”

“Your ex-husband?”

“I didn’t tell him.”

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

“Is your ex-husband Ethan Walker?”

Elena stopped breathing.

“How do you know his name?”

Before Adrian could answer, a tall woman in a charcoal suit appeared at the front of the cabin. She showed identification to the flight attendant and walked toward them with the efficient movements of someone accustomed to emergencies.

She leaned down beside Adrian.w

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

Her eyes flicked toward Elena.

Adrian noticed.

“Say it.”

The woman hesitated.

“A man has been asking airport personnel where arriving passengers from Monterrey will exit. He’s shown people a photograph of a woman and a little girl.”

Elena’s grip tightened around Lily.

The woman continued.

“He claims he’s the girl’s father.”

Adrian’s jaw hardened.

Elena whispered, “Ethan.”

The woman looked at her.

“You know him?”
