PART 2: A Stranger Let Me Sleep on His Shoulder—Then My Ex-Husband Found Me Before the Plane Even Landed -030

“You should be grateful I’m not billing you for emotional damages.”

“Elena—”

“And Lily?”

Silence.

She pushed.

“Was she part of the plan?”

“No.”

“Were you going to take her from me?”

“No.”

“You filed for sole custody.”

“To force you home.”

“By declaring me mentally unstable?”

“I needed leverage.”

Elena stared into darkness.

There it was.

Not remorse.

Not shame.

Leverage.

“I have one final question.”

“What?”

“Who told you about the trust?”

For the first time, Ethan sounded afraid.

“Nobody.”

“That’s a lie.”

“I found the file.”

“Which file?”

“Archived compliance.”

“Who gave you access?”

“No one.”

“Ethan.”

“Come downstairs and I’ll explain.”

“Elena,” Mara whispered, “keep him talking.”

She continued.

“You weren’t senior enough to access founder-level records.”

Ethan said nothing.

Elena remembered something.

A dinner.

Three years ago.

A man Ethan had introduced as an old client.

Silver hair.

Expensive watch.

A booming laugh.

The man had stared at Elena for too long when Ethan said her maiden name.

Morales.

Her heart hammered.

“What was the name of that client you brought to dinner at Del Frisco’s?”

Ethan’s breathing changed.

“Elena.”

“The older man.”

“Stop.”

“Richard.”

“Elena.”

“Richard Prescott.”

The line went dead.

Everyone in the room froze.

Adrian had appeared in the doorway.

His face was colorless.

“My uncle?”

Richard Prescott had been vice chairman of the family empire for twenty-seven years.

He was also Adrian’s godfather.

The man who taught Adrian to drive.

The man who sat beside him during his mother’s funeral.

The man Adrian had defended repeatedly during the recent board fight.

“No,” Adrian said.

Catherine closed her laptop.

“Adrian.”

“No.”

“The evidence—”

“Isn’t evidence. Elena remembered having dinner with someone named Richard.”

“Elena quietly said, “It was him.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I recognized him when I started seeing your family on television after you told me who you were. I didn’t place him until now.”

Mara was already working.

“I’m pulling the Langford cameras from tonight.”

Adrian paced.

“My uncle has been fighting me over Prescott Health because he thinks I’m destroying shareholder value.”

Catherine said, “And Mateo’s trust carries founder-class voting rights.”

Elena frowned.

“I thought you said twelve percent.”

“Twelve percent economic ownership originally.”

“What about voting power?”

Catherine hesitated.

“Twenty-five percent on specific protected transactions.”

Adrian stopped walking.

The meaning hit him.

“The hospital sale.”

“Yes.”

“Mateo’s shares can block it.”

“Yes.”

“So Richard needs control of Elena’s trust.”

“Or Lily’s.”

Elena felt sick.

Catherine continued.

“If Richard gained access through Ethan, they could activate the trust, use spousal or guardianship authority, vote the shares, and approve the sale.”

“How much would Richard make?” Elena asked.

The younger attorney answered.

“Personally? Potentially hundreds of millions.”

Elena stared at Adrian.

“And Ethan?”

“Whatever Richard promised him.”

Mara interrupted.

“I found something.”

She turned her laptop.

A private dining-room security image from three years earlier.

Ethan sat at a table.

Beside him sat Richard Prescott.

Across from them—

Elena.

Her younger self was smiling.

Clueless.

The timestamp was three months before Ethan proposed.

The next image had been captured after Elena left the table for the restroom.

Ethan and Richard were leaning toward one another.

Richard was sliding an envelope across the table.

Mara zoomed in.

A handwritten notation was visible.

M.M. BENEFICIARY

Adrian sat down heavily.

“My own uncle.”

Catherine whispered, “I’m sorry.”

For several minutes Adrian said nothing.

Elena recognized the expression on his face.

She had worn the same one hours earlier.

The look of someone mentally revisiting years of memories and wondering which ones had been genuine.

Betrayal did that.

It didn’t only destroy the present.

It traveled backward.

Poisoned birthdays.

Holidays.

Inside jokes.

Funerals.

Every memory became evidence.

Elena sat opposite him.“He taught you to drive?”

Adrian looked surprised.

“How did you know?”

“The way you reacted.”

A faint, painful smile.

“Yes.”

“What kind of car?”

“An old Mercedes.”

“Did you crash it?”

“Into a hedge.”

Elena smiled.

“What did he do?”

“He told my father he’d been driving.”

“Why?”

“Because my father would have killed me.”

“So maybe that part was real.”

Adrian stared at her.

She continued.

“People can love us and still do terrible things.”

“Are you defending him?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m trying to stop you from doing what I’ve been doing all night.”

“What?”

“Convincing yourself every good memory must have been fake because the ending was ugly.”

Adrian looked at her for a long moment.

“Did Ethan love you?”

Elena’s throat tightened.

“I don’t know.”

Then she corrected herself.

“Maybe. In whatever broken way he knows how.”

She looked toward Lily’s room.

“But love that requires someone else to lose their freedom isn’t love I’m willing to keep.”

At 2:40 in the morning, someone triggered the hotel’s service elevator.

Mara knew before the elevator moved three floors.

Security locked the private level.

Adrian woke Elena.

She sat upright on the sofa.

“What?”

“Someone’s trying to access the floor.”

“Ethan?”

“We don’t know.”

Lily slept in the bedroom.

Elena immediately stood.

Mara entered carrying a tablet.

“Six men.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Police?”

“No.”

“Armed?”

“Two appear to be.”

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs.

“Call the police.”

“Already done.”

Then the private elevator screen flashed.

FIRE OVERRIDE.

Mara swore.

“They’ve got building credentials.”

Adrian grabbed Elena’s arm, then immediately released her.

“Sorry. Bedroom. Now.”

“What about you?”

“Go.”

Elena ran.

Lily woke as Elena lifted her from the bed.

“Mama?”

“Shh. We’re playing a game.”

“What game?”

“The quiet game.”

“I don’t like that game.”

“I know.”

A violent thud echoed from outside.

Then shouting.

Lily’s eyes widened.

Elena pressed her daughter’s face against her shoulder.

“It’s okay.”

Another crash.

Footsteps.

Men yelling.

Then Adrian’s voice.

“Stay back!”

A gunshot exploded.

Elena froze.

Lily screamed.

Everything after that happened in pieces.

A security guard shouting.

Glass shattering.

Mara ordering someone to the ground.

Another gunshot.

Elena locking the bedroom.

Lily crying.

A man’s voice outside yelling:

“Elena! Ethan sent us! We need to get you out!”

She almost laughed at the absurdity.

Get her out.

With guns.

Someone slammed into the bedroom door.

Elena backed away.

Then she saw the connecting bathroom.

Another exit.

She carried Lily inside and locked that door too.

Her phone rang.

Ethan.

Of course.

She answered.

“You sent armed men?”

“Elena, listen—”

“What is wrong with you?”

“Prescott is holding you.”

“He isn’t.”

“He’s manipulating you.”

“Your men are shooting at his security!”

“I told them not to hurt anyone.”

“That makes it better?”
