PART 2: A Stranger Let Me Sleep on His Shoulder—Then My Ex-Husband Found Me Before the Plane Even Landed -030

Then her phone vibrated again.

This time Ethan called.

She stared at his name.

Adrian said nothing.

Neither did Mara.

Elena answered.

“Hello?”

For two seconds there was silence.

Then Ethan laughed softly.

“Running away was dramatic, even for you.”

Elena felt something old awaken inside her.

Fear.

The instinct to explain.

To apologize.

To calm him.

Five years of marriage had taught her that Ethan’s anger was always somehow her responsibility.

She forced herself not to fall into the pattern.

“I didn’t run away.”

“You crossed an international border with my daughter.”

“She is with her mother.”

“She is also my child.”

“You changed the locks.”

Another pause.

“That was temporary.”

“You emptied our checking account.”

“I moved marital assets for protection.”

“You blocked my cards.”

“Because you’ve been behaving irrationally.”

Elena closed her eyes.

There it was.

The word Ethan always used whenever she resisted him.

Irrational.

“You posted photographs kissing another woman.”

“That is irrelevant.”

“Not to our marriage.”

“Elena.”

His voice changed.

Softer now.

More dangerous.

“Where are you?”

She looked at Adrian.

Adrian slowly shook his head.

“No,” Elena said.

Ethan stopped.

“What?”

“I said no.”

She had never heard herself speak to him like that.

Apparently neither had he.

When Ethan answered, the charm was gone.

“You need to listen carefully. There are things happening that you don’t understand.”

“Then explain them.”

“I will. When I see you.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

Ethan exhaled sharply.

“Do not leave that airport.”

Her skin prickled.

“Why?”

“Because if you make this difficult, you will regret it.”

Elena’s voice dropped.

“Is that a threat?”

“It is a warning.”

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“And whatever you do, do not sign anything Adrian Prescott gives you.”

Elena stared at the man sitting beside her.

Adrian stared back.

The call ended.

For several seconds neither of them spoke.

Mara finally said, “That’s interesting.”

Elena barely heard her.

She was looking at Adrian.

“You already knew Ethan.”

“No.”

“He knew you.”

“Apparently.”

“You knew his full name before I told you.”

“Because Mara messaged it to me thirty seconds before she reached our row.”

Elena looked between them.

Mara nodded.

“He’s telling the truth.”

Elena hated how relieved that made her feel.

Adrian leaned closer.

“But the fact that your husband knows my name, knows you’re sitting beside me, and is terrified I’ll give you something to sign means we have a much bigger problem.”

They left the airplane through a service stairway.

It was the first time Elena had ever stepped directly onto an airport tarmac.

Heat rushed over her instantly.

Two black SUVs waited beyond the aircraft, surrounded by security personnel.

Elena stopped.

“This is insane.”

Adrian took Lily’s folded stroller from Mara.

“Probably.”

“I was supposed to take an Uber to Pasadena.”

“That would currently be an extremely bad idea.”

“My cousin is waiting.”

Mara looked up from her phone.

“Actually, she isn’t.”

Elena turned.

“What?”

“The number you gave us for your cousin was disconnected eleven minutes ago.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Her name is Marisol Reyes?”

“Yes.”

“Her apartment lease ended three days ago.”

Elena stared at her.

“No. She messaged me yesterday.”

“Did you speak on the phone?”

“No.”

“Video call?”

“No.”

“Only text?”

Elena nodded slowly.

Mara’s expression hardened.

“Then we don’t know who you’ve been messaging.”

The tarmac seemed to tilt beneath Elena’s feet.

She grabbed the stroller handle.

“No.”

“Elena—”

“No. Marisol contacted me after she heard what Ethan did.”

“How?”

“My aunt told her.”

“Did you ask your aunt?”

Elena opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

No.

She hadn’t.

She had been desperate.

Humiliated.

Terrified of becoming homeless with a three-year-old.

When a cousin she hadn’t seen in seven years suddenly messaged saying, Come stay with me in Houston. You and Lily are family, Elena had accepted the lifeline without examining it.

A black SUV turned onto the service road.

Mara immediately stepped between Elena and the vehicle.

One of her agents murmured into his sleeve.

Then relaxed.

“Airport operations.”

Elena’s hands shook.

Adrian noticed.

“You don’t have to come with me,” he said. “Mara can arrange a hotel under another name. Or airport police. Or federal authorities if necessary.”

“Federal?”

“You crossed from Mexico into the United States while somebody appears to be tracking you under false pretenses.”

Elena looked at Lily.

Her daughter’s face was buried against her shoulder.

She had spent five years making decisions according to what would upset Ethan least.

Now she had one responsibility.

Protect Lily.

“Hotel,” Elena whispered.

Adrian nodded.

“Hotel.”

But fifteen minutes later, Mara’s team found something inside the stroller.

A tracking tag.

It had been sewn beneath the fabric seat.

Elena stared at the tiny device sealed inside a plastic pouch.

She recognized the stitching.

Dark blue thread.

She had seen Ethan repairing the stroller two nights earlier.

At the time he’d claimed one of the straps looked loose.

He had known she was leaving before Elena herself had decided to go.

Her knees weakened.

Adrian caught her elbow.

Elena jerked away automatically.

“Sorry,” he said immediately.
