My Son’s Fiancée Asked Me Not to Wear Blue to Their Wedding – Then I Saw What Her Mother Was Wearing

“When you asked if I was happy, I wanted to say no.”

I pressed my hand to my mouth.

Vanessa stepped back.

“What are you saying?”

Grant faced her.

“I’m saying I should have answered my mother.”

“We just got married.”

“I know.”

Her voice cracked.

“So you’re humiliating me in front of everyone?”

Grant looked around the room.

“No. I shouldn’t have started this as a toast.”

He glanced at me.

“Mom was right about that.”

I gave him a small nod.

Then he turned back to Vanessa.

“But I’m not pretending anymore.”

Her anger faded.

For the first time that day, Vanessa looked scared.

“Are you leaving me?”

Grant took a breath.

“I don’t know what happens next.”

That answer felt more honest than anything else he had said.

“I know we need help,” he continued. “Real help. And I need to stop saying yes just because I’m afraid you’ll be upset.”

Vanessa wiped at her cheek.

Her mother moved toward her.

Vanessa raised a hand.

“Mom, please.”

That surprised me.

Her mother stopped.

Vanessa looked at Grant.

“I didn’t realize you felt like that.”

Grant’s eyes narrowed.

“I’ve tried to tell you.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

The admission seemed difficult for her.

Then she looked at me.

“I’m sorry about the dress.”

I said nothing at first.

Don’t miss

She took a shaky breath.

“It was cruel.”

Her mother frowned.

“Vanessa.”

“No, Mom.”

Vanessa turned toward her.

“It was.”

Something shifted in the room.

Maybe it was the first honest thing Vanessa had said all day.

I looked at her.

“The dress was never really the problem.”

“I know.”
